Welcome to Room 303! My name is Ms.Sue Freese and I am the teacher in Room 303. I have been teaching for 22 years and I love my job. I feel it is a privilege and an honor to be able to teach your child. Working together with you, their parents, we will strive to have a successful year.
Since third grade is such a big transition from second grade, we need to work together to help your child have a successful school year. In addition to learning new information and concepts, your child will be taking the PARCC tests this year. It is imperative that your child follows the procedures and policies in order to make this a beneficial learning experience.
First of all, homework is a very necessary and important part of the third grade curriculum. Homework must be turned in on time (usually the next day) or it is considered late. Work will be accepted only one day late, and points will be taken off the grade. If your child is absent, they are responsible for making up all missed work within a few days of the absence. Late work affects the student's grades drastically and should be avoided.
Your child will be having Spelling and Reading tests weekly. They are expected to study for their tests. Science and Social Studies tests will be given approximately every 2- 3 weeks after starting a new unit. Please help your child study and prepare for these tests. Multiplication (1-12) is also a very important skill that must be mastered by the end of third grade. Please begin to practice daily with your child. In addition, according to CPS policy, a child may have no more than 9 unexcused absences for the year and they need to receive a grade of C or higher in all core subjects in order to avoid summer school and/or possible retention. If your child is absent they must bring a parent note to school the next day. Please keep all of this information in mind as you help your child to have a successful school year.
We also require your child to read for 20 minutes every day. This should be material of their choice. Please check your child's assignment notebook daily and ensure that all homework has been completed. If you ever need to contact me regarding your child, you may send a note, email me at bsfreese@cps.edu, or call and leave a message at the office. I feel it is very important for the teacher and parents to communicate so the best interest of the child is served. Let's have a great year in 3rd grade!
